Direct Selling Communication Exercise
Your turn readers…
Ever play connect the dots?
Remember trying to figure out what the dots would make, as you were drawing the lines from dot to dot?
Did you ever get out of order and mess up the picture?
This is kind of how communication works… as long as the dots are in the right order we see the same picture… but what if…. We had all different numbering sequences… then we might end up with different pictures….
“Wow that guy is sharp!”
Yikes! Are you looking at using him to cut your steak? Butter your toast? Saw down a tree? What on earth does ‘sharp’ mean?
In the direct selling arena, I hear people telling me about a new prospect or direct selling client and how “sharp” they are… I have come to understand ‘sharp’ in one person’s mind is NOT the same in another person’s.
The words we use, shape our perception… in turn, influencing our decision making… and ultimately shaping our actions…
So… what does the word mean?
I strongly believe in the power of definition. Understanding what a word means to you opens up new understanding to the way you value, perceive and interact with world around you.
I enjoy asking people how they define certain words… not www.dictionary.com or websters definition, just theirs… after they answer, I share other people’s definitions that I have heard. I see their eyes light up as the dots are being connected from a different direction, creating a new picture. Creating a new opportunity!
In your words, define Leadership.

Hi Mark,
forget leadership, you have my captivated attention trying to connect the dots with my finger on my laptop! At first looked to me like a baseball mitt…. Hmmm. Perhaps a Mothers Day bouquet?
Leadership – caring for the others and establishing a model of behavior worthy of following. Without first caring about them and yourself, then it is a dictator or a martyr.

If I was ever given a lead and told that the guy was “sharp” I would take that to mean that they are knowledgable and understand complicated things.
In selling to such a person, I like to hit on the big differentiators between me and my competition and get right into figuring out exactly what he is looking for. Because he has probably got a good idea what his objectives are and it is my job to match my products to his needs, then the sale will be almost automatic as long as he trusts that I am telling him the truth. I have also found that sharp people like to deal with people who don’t waste their time, so I try to be very aware of this.
With someone who is less sharp, the sales person needs to do a lot more of the work because the customer is not going to ever feel really comfortable making the decision. They are going to rely more on the sales pros opinion, and that means the trust factor needs to be even greater.

a HA! I think @Suzy could be right about this. Is that another demonstration of leadership? Slow going and stay the course? Oh, and you gotta bring your own armor and the only way to get anywhere is to stick your neck out?

I’m a big fan of dictionaries & the usage of words & language.
Leadership is a funny word because a lot of people associate it with being a manager.
I think the two could not be further apart. A manager manages assets & keeps track of them.
Almost a caretaker kind of role. Doesnt make any decisions really on their own & just follows the mandate from the higher-ups.
Leader guides those they are in charge of & directs your conduct & behavior & actions, correctign them if they are of course for what the outcome is that you are out to achieve. In the process, if they are really good at it, they become someone you willingly follow & will give your all for.
Just my two cents

One time I took a business writing class and the topic for the night was semantics. the teacher went around the room and asked us all what we thought of when she said the word “rose.” There were 12 students and she got 12 different answers. So each person’s definition of a word may differ from the dictionary’s as well as everybody’s around them.

Leadership – making people want to follow you
It is always good to make sure you are defining words the same as the person you are speaking with. This is especially true if they are from a different culture, country or speak a different language!
